AI Safety Regensburg
A local community for people in Regensburg who want to understand the risks from advanced AI, and help reduce them.
We started in November 2026 and are just getting going. Everyone is welcome — students, researchers, professionals and the simply curious. No background in AI required.
Why AI safety
AI systems are becoming more capable very quickly, while our understanding of how they work, and how to make them reliably do what we intend, lags behind. Many researchers, including some of the field's pioneers, warn that advanced AI could cause catastrophic harm: through misuse, or through systems pursuing goals nobody intended.
AI safety is the work of preventing this, through technical research, governance and policy, and public understanding. We think it is one of the most important problems of our time, and that people in Regensburg can help with it.
What we're planning
We'd like to start small and grow with the people who join. Our first ideas:
- A reading group
- Working through key papers and introductory course material together, then discussing them properly.
- Talks and watch parties
- Talks by researchers, and screenings of online talks from Safe AI Germany, followed by discussion.
- Informal meetups
- Getting to know others in Regensburg who care about making advanced AI go well.
Have an idea, a topic, or a venue to suggest? We'd love to hear it.
Events
Nothing is scheduled yet. Join the Signal group to hear about our first meetup.
Who we are
AI Safety Regensburg was started by Bastiaan Cnossen, a postdoctoral researcher in mathematics at the University of Regensburg.
We're looking for co-organisers: students, researchers or professionals, from any field. If you'd like to help shape what this group becomes, please get in touch.
We are an independent group, not affiliated with the University of Regensburg, and supported by Safe AI Germany, the national network of local AI safety groups.
Start here
No need to wait for a meetup. Some good places to begin:
- AISafety.infoPlain-language answers to the questions most people start with.
- BlueDot Impact coursesFree, structured courses on AI safety and governance.
- 80,000 Hours on AI riskAn in-depth overview of the problem, and how to work on it.
- AI Safety MapA map of the field: organisations, courses, communities and funders.
